The essential importance of water resources for agricultural activity was highlighted during the meeting of MEPs with members of the Irrigators Community of Nijar, founded in 1999 and considered an example of operation, efficiency and funding. The Community Water Users of the District of Nijar (CUCN) has more than 2.300 farmers and an irrigated surface of 8.500 hectares of crops.

At its headquarters in San Isidro (Nijar), the president of this community, Antonio López welcomed the MEPs to whom he explained the origins of the irrigators community and how -because of the low level of rainfall in this area and the precarious situation of aquifers- farmers joined forces to undertake an impressive piping network that allows to irrigate crops in the region of Nijar with desalinated seawater. The network has over 700 kilometers of pipeline and an investment of 60 million euros.

“Thanks to this work, we went from having the worst irrigation water to have one of the best irrigated areas in Spain”, noted the president of the Community of irrigators. Additionally, the greenhouses in the area are designed to collect the scarce rainwater and channel it to the irrigation ponds.

On his part, its president, Antonio López, stressed the need for a regulation governing the use of desalinated water used for irrigation and requested support to compensate for such consumption for the environmental and economic contribution to the surroundings. The group of socialist MEPs valued the entrepreneurial spirit of this community of irrigators, a model of good management of scarce water resources available in this Andalusian province.
